The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception by James J. Gibson
Experiments on the information one gets about oneself (location, orientation of head, the importance of that blurry bit of nose).

Professional Portrait Techniques (Kodak Publication ; No. 0-4) by Eastman Kodak Staff
A very old book. This book was published back in 1980, but it has lots of stunning portraits with comprehensive info on lighting arrangement, camera, and lens choice. Plus the psychological aspect of portraits.

"Portraits" by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz, 2nd edition, 1997, published by Rotovision. This book is from the "Pro Lighting" book series and gives lots and lots of tips and insights on lighting setups and techniques for portraits. You can buy this one from Amazon.com or any major photo shop such as B&H in NY city.
